Today, the State of Qatar officially received the ball for the 2027 FIBA World Cup during a ceremony held at the 2023 FIBA World Cup closing ceremony in Manila, Philippines. Manuel Pangilinan, Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the 2023 World Cup in the Philippines, presented the ball to Haman Niang, President of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). President Niang then handed it over to Mohamed Al Maghaiseeb, President of the Qatar Basketball Federation, and Sheikha Asma Al Thani, Director of the Marketing and Communication Department of the Qatar Olympic Committee.
In response to this occasion, Mohammed Al-Mughisib expressed his delight, stating, “We are delighted to receive the Basketball World Cup ball and to have had the opportunity to witness the organizational experience of the Philippines and the distinguished organization that accompanied it. Hosting such a significant sporting event for one of the most popular games in the world is another step in our sporting career, and we will be keen to take advantage of this opportunity to organize an exceptional edition that will attract the interest of a new group of followers and fans.”
The International Basketball Federation awarded Qatar the hosting rights for the 2027 World Cup during a meeting held in Manila on April 28. Qatar’s successful bid marked the first time the tournament would be hosted in the Middle East and North Africa region. The decision was influenced by Qatar’s exceptional sports facilities, its commitment to sports development, and its successful track record in hosting major sports events, including the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
The Qatari proposal also emphasized legacy plans to promote basketball development in the region and around the world. With the readiness of the sports facilities that will host the 2027 Basketball World Cup, this edition is set to be the most sustainable in its history.
Qatar’s selection as the host country means that it will host the third consecutive World Cup in Asia, following China’s hosting of the 2019 edition. The 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Doha will feature 32 teams, providing fans with more opportunities to experience the tournament firsthand.
